Half Caste

Nikita asks us a simple question: what do you want to get out of the Whitworth residency? Why are you here? Our answers take us to the heart of the project. They build to a crescendo.

Nikita: 'Why are you here?'

Dionne: 'Growing up it was a good time in my life. It was crazy but it was happy crazy.'

Karen: 'It would be great to capture these characters. A glimpse of all the ghosts.'

Suzie Q:' It gave us a sense of Identity.'

Barry: 'We were walking down the road and we were expected to part when the white guys walked up but we decided to walk through them and it kicked off . . .  it was an explosion of half caste.'

Carmen: 'I found it really hard changing from half caste to mixed race.'

Me: 'I don't think any of the mixes after us are that interesting . . . we're the first generation we've not occured on mass before.'

Suzie Q: '2 Nation Bitch – that's what we were called in school.'

Suzy M: 'If I went somewhere out of the country, somewhere there was no black people, they wouldn't call me a mixed race whatever they'd call me a nigger.'
